"Night of the Living Dread" on WRUW Radio 91.1 FM Cleveland
For 38 years (1982 - 2020), we were spinning reggae hits for the Cleveland, Ohio audience on a weekly radio show at WRUW 91.1 FM called "Night of the Living Dread." We featured a wide range of Jamaican music, from Mento to Dancehall.
When a Jamaican music Disc Jockey asks singers, players, or producers for anything, they are always generous.
The most valuable thing imagined is their time.
The most valuable thing imagined is their time.
"Night of The Living Dread" - 19 June 2015
A "Roundtable" conversation with Herman Sang, Boris Gardiner, and Derrick Harriott. The conversation includes discussion on the use of patois in Jamaican lyrics, early amplifier construction, live shows, Studio One origins, Chart hits in Jamaica, and more.

Tunes played on 05, July, 2013 on "Night of the Living Dread"
*We started out with a couple "Tighten Up" LP selections. Great oldie music on a series very similar to the modern day "reggae Gold" and Strictly The Best." We;'ve had the Tighten Up album in the WRUW collection for years - played hundreds of times.

*Just picked up the album. Very good quality with McCook, Alphonso, Jah Jerry, Knibbs, Dizzy Moore, Lloyd Brevette, Lester Sterling, Jackie Mittoo (great huh). A collection of the best of the best in The Skatalites. Synergy actually produced the album. Synergy (Tony Robinson, Don Green, Ronnie Burke, and John Wakeling) was the group who created Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica. This performance appears to be from 1989 (although it is not listed on the album). Nice - very nice.

*Even more Dennis Sindrey. These tracks are from his "Treasure Chest" album. You'll hear more from Dennis as he recently supplied us with eight Cds of his single tracks from over the years. Much of his early singles, appearances on releases with other artists, and more. Terrific. Dennis came to jamaica to play with The Caribs in the pre Ska and pre Shuffle eras. He recorded as a studio guitarist is sessions at Federal in the very early days before Coxsone and Duke Reid had studios. Dennis was all over the place in musical history.

*Just picked up the album. The Hiltonaires are one of the more popular Hotel Mento groups from Jamaica. They are from the Hilton Hotel in Ocho Rios, Ja. There are roughly six albums that were released over the years, with various re-workings of some of the albums - most notably, "Big Bamboo."

*I wanted to play some very early Sean Paul. The second track is with Mr. Vegas. The two were a duo in the late 1990's - recording approximately a half dozen tracks at my count. They were popular as a duo, but got into some form of argument and never recorded together again to my knowledge. Also, Mr Vegas developed his singing style after he broke his jaw and has his mouth wired shut. He sang with his mouth wired and then once the wiring was removed, he maintained that singing style. recently, Mr. Vegas has once again bubbled up on the music scene.

A Red Stripe Party!
Original Album - The creation of Dennis Sindrey.
Friday May 24, 2013 we had a "Red Stripe Party" at WRUW. It is featured on the second hour of the show and is available for download for one week only at the WRUW website. The show features and interview with Dennis Sindrey of The caribs. Dennis was hired by Red Stripe to be the Musical Director for the album. Dennis worked with Ken Khouri from federal and recorded all four bands in four days with Graeme Goodall as the engineer. We drank two cases of red Stripe during the two hour show. Lotta fun.
